I'm Dave Iverson, and I've been a television and radio producer for over 30 years. Two years ago, I took on a very personal project, a film about Parkinson's Disease. I first learned about Parkinson's in the fall of 1971. That was when I got a letter from my mom telling me that my father had been diagnosed with the disease. Twenty years later, my brother was diagnosed with Parkinson's. And in the summer of 2002, I began experiencing familiar symptoms; it would be two years before my diagnosis became official, but I knew what the likely outcome would be. So for me, Parkinson's is a personal story, but the disease is much more than a family saga. It's the second most common neurological disorder there is, and it raises intriguing questions for science and our aging society. Our film, My Father, My Brother and Me, explores all of these angles. I hope you'll join our conversation. Saturday, January 31, 2009; 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Difficult Conversations About Difficult Decisions Mt. Nearly 15 years ago, Thomas Graboys seemed to have it all. He was a talented and well-respected cardiologist, on staff at Harvard Medical School and running a thriving private practice. He was popular for his attention to the hearts and souls of his patients. But at age 49, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease Dementia, a particularly aggressive form of Parkinson's Disease with progressive dementia. PDD is marked by confusion, violent nightmares and hallucinations. In 2005, Graboys was forced to give up his practice. Today, he is stooped, and shuffles when he walks, the gait of a man much older than his 63 years. Despite the physical, mental and emotional toll he battles daily, Graboys continues his life-long mission of caring for the world one human being at a time by telling his story so that others may find comfort, inspiration, or validation in their own struggles. His book "Life in the Balance," published in April 2008, is an unflinching memoir of a devastating illness and the journey from doctor to patient. One can't help but imagine what Dr. Graboys, the healer, would say to Tom Graboys, the patient; a face-to-face scene is imagined in his inspiring book. In his joint roles, Graboys finds a way to convey hope, optimism and an appreciation of what it means to be truly alive. Dr. Tom Graboys and his wife Vicki Baker Graboys will be answering your questions about life, love, and loss with Parkinson's Disease Dementia. His presentation is open to the public and will start at 3 p.m. Hope to see you there. To find out more about Parky, log on to Parky's website - I never give up Parky's Pals !! - A Case for Exercising Regularly I enjoy cycling so very much. It gives me the ability to function in a non-Parkinson atmosphere. My friends & I meet 3 times a week at 8:30am, at the Burger King, and ride around Hemet for 2-3 hours. We usually ride from 20 to 45 miles each day. My friends are very understanding of my situation, & on the my "off days", which are still very few, they make sure that I'm not left behind. But believe me when I tell you that they remark much more often about struggling to keep up with me. I have finally found a light-weight trike that fits my abilities, & is forgiving to my disabilities. It is not difficult to ride at 20 mph on flat ground. It is a British made "Trice QNT". I am starting to notice some rigidity in my neck, shoulders, & chest, but I have no problems with my legs. I have started to do stretching exercises more often, lately. The stiff muscles do cause me some pain, but it is no worse when I am riding, & the enjoyment that I get is well worth the discomfort. Parkinson's not only takes away our ability to function, but it also takes away our dignity, or tries. When I get outside & get to do something that I have control of, it works miracles on my ego. Just this morning, I rode 29.5 miles in 77 degree weather. It was fun, & having fun can be difficult for we who are struggling with Parkinson's disease. Don't let PD take you without a fight. Get started today, on a serious exercise program. I have never heard a doctor, that deals with movement disorders, complain about his patients getting too much exercise.........Parky Saturday January 20 7:30 PM San Rafael CHARLIE NIMOVITZ IN CONCERT AT OPEN SECRET accompanied by Ross Gualco on keyboards admission $15 (or whatever you can afford) Open Secret Bookstore is at 923 'C' street in downtown San Rafael between 3rd and 4th st Charlie's home page Palo Alto January 10,2007, Wednesday at 2:00 -3:30 pm Join the Palo Alto Support Group . Wednesday, September 20 Opening Reception is from 7-9 pm If you live in the Bay Area, this is your chance to upgrade your art collections, refresh your walls and help find a cure for a debilitating disease! One year ago, professional designer Heather Landers discovered that many of her colleagues had yet to make the leap into decorating with real art. Declaring that her generation is now "Old Enough to Buy Art" she created a gallery event for that purpose, donating the proceeds to NPF on behalf of a close family member. The event was so well attended and so much fun, she is having another one. The public is invited to attend the opening of Old Enough to Buy Art - 2 on Wednesday, September 20, 2006, at The Melting Point Gallery on Bryant Street in San Francisco. The opening reception is from 7-9 pm that evening. The exhibition continues through Wednesday, September 27, 2006 and includes a private party on Saturday. Proceeds will again be donated to NPF to help with research initiatives. Heather selects local Bay Area artists for the event whose art reflects the preferences of her clients. She is offering a variety of prints, paintings, photographs and other works all at very affordable prices.
